Forecasters are warning of a heightened risk of severe weather and flash flooding across Iowa through Friday night as multiple rounds of thunderstorms are expected to move through the state. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines has issued a flood watch for nearly two dozen southwestern and southern Iowa counties, including Audubon, Greene, and Guthrie, beginning late this (Thursday) afternoon and continuing through sunrise Friday, citing the potential for heavy rainfall and severe storms. Rainfall totals of up to four inches are forecast in portions of southern and central Iowa by Friday morning, with higher amounts possible. The weather service warns that heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Urban ponding and rises on local rivers and streams are also possible. A second round of storms is expected late Friday and Friday night. Forecasters say some of those storms may be severe and could produce damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain, and additional flash flooding. Some tornadoes may also be possible. Remember, it takes as little as six inches of fast-moving water to knock down an adult, and just 12 inches of water is enough to carry away a vehicle. Officials stress that it is never safe to drive or walk in flood waters. Residents are encouraged to remain weather-aware, monitor forecasts, and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
