A Scranton woman was found guilty last week by a jury of her peers on five charges stemming from intentionally setting her house on fire for insurance claim purposes. According to Greene County District Court records, 28-year-old Conner Laine Groves was found guilty on four felony counts, including: first-degree fraudulent practice, second-degree arson, both class C felonies, conspiracy to commit felony, and insurance fraud, both class D felonies, as well as possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, a serious misdemeanor. The fire occurred on October 2, 2023, in the 800 block of Sand Street in Churdan. The house was deemed a total loss and caused over $10,000 worth of damage to nearby buildings. Groves was reported to convince other individuals into assisting her light the house on fire, and putting items down as damaged in the claim that were found at her new residence. Groves remains in custody at the Greene County Jail, awaiting a sentencing hearing. She can face up to 31 years in prison and over $44,000 in fines on all charges.
