The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding boaters and anglers to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species this Memorial Day weekend by following the “Clean, Drain, Dry” protocol. Invasive species, such as zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil, can easily spread between lakes and rivers by clinging to boats, trailers, and fishing gear. Once introduced, they can damage ecosystems, reduce native species, and create problems for boaters and swimmers. Iowa law requires boaters to clean off any visible plants, animals, or mud, drain all water from boats and equipment, and dry everything for at least five days or wash with hot or high-pressure water before moving to another waterbody.
