Kenneth H. “Shorty” Wieland, 80 of Templeton, died May 17, 2025, at the Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids, Iowa.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, May 23, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton. The Celebrant will be Fr. Terry Roder. Music will be by Hannah Kerkhoff and the Templeton Men’s Choir. Lector for the Funeral Mass will be Catherine Wernimont. Gift Bearers will be Carol Irlmeier and Cathy Pederson. Eucharistic Minister will be Diane Meiners. Casket Bearers will be Matt Conner, Oliver Conner, Don Irlbeck, Duane Irlbeck, Dean Onken, and Kevin Wieland. Honorary Pallbearers will be Weston Conner, Steward Conner, Aaron Fay, Pat Fay, Glen Irlbeck, Jim McLaughlin, Denny Garvis and John Snyder. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton.
Visitation will be from 9:30-10:45 a.m., on Friday at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton prior to the Funeral Mass.

Kenneth H. (Shorty) Wieland, passed away on May 17, 2025, at the age of 80. He was born on June 17, 1944, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Carroll, Iowa, to Arthur and Gertrude (Vonnahme) Wieland. Shorty attended Lidderdale Country School. On April 20, 1979, Shorty married Frances Peter from Dedham, Iowa. Shorty and Frances made their home together in Templeton, Iowa.
As a younger man, Shorty milked cows for Carroll-based farmer Leonard Schechinger, did masonry work for businessman Jim McLaughlin and was employed at the Aspinwall Cooperative.
Shorty worked in construction at Templeton Building & Home Center and as a custodian for Holy Trinity School in Templeton during the 1980s and 1990s. During this time, he also owned “Shorty’s Wood Service” using his chain saws, log splitter, ambition and strength to cut and stockpile wood. He sold the wood in small and large quantities alike.
Shorty was well-known around town for giving people a hard time, tinkering in his garage, gardening, mowing, cruising on the golf cart and dishing up his famous potatoes.
He tremendously enjoyed driving his beloved red tractor in tractor rides. Another great love of Shorty’s was for his wife, Frances, and his cat, Punkie. His proudest accomplishment was 41 years of sobriety with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
Kenneth is survived by his wife Frances Wieland. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Betty Riesenberg, Jane Peter, Carol Irlmeier, and many nieces and nephews.
Kenneth is proceeded in death by his parents, Arthur and Gertrude (Vonnahme) Wieland, brothers, Arthur Jr., Donald and Donald’s twin sister who was stillborn; nephew, Brian, and his wife, Linda Wieland.
