Early Man Injured In Buena Vista County Crash Sunday

One person was killed and two people were injured, including an Early man, following a two-vehicle crash in Buena Vista County over the weekend. According to the Iowa State Patrol, that crash occurred at approximately 5:04 a.m. Sunday morning on Highway 71 near mile marker 162. Authorities say a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse, operated by 27-year-old Merren Mauricio of Alta, was traveling northbound on Highway 71 and crossed the centerline into the path of a southbound 2019 Jeep Wrangler, driven by 21-year-old Estevan Rodriquez of Alta. The two vehicles collided head-on, with the Mauricio SUV coming to rest on the east shoulder and the Rodriguez Jeep settling on the west shoulder. Mauricio was pronounced dead at the scene. Rodriquez and his passenger, 30-year-old Lucero Martinez-Juarez of Early, were transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Law enforcement notes dense fog early Sunday morning may have played a factor in the collision. The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office and the Storm Lake Police and Fire Departments.
