Law Enforcement Reports Spate Of “Smishing” Attacks For Local Bank Customers

Several local banks have reported a recent increase in “smishing” scam attempts targeted at their customers, and law enforcement is reminding residents to be on guard. Smishing is similar to the commonly known “phishing” scams, but rather than using email, these criminals use cell phone text messages as their primary avenue of attack. Potential victims report receiving a text message that appears to come from their financial institution suggesting fraudulent activity or that their account has been put on hold as a security measure. The message includes a link that takes users to a fake log-in site to steal their user information and gain access to online bank accounts. These recent reports are not connected to one specific bank or branch. Customers are asked not to click on suspicious links received by text from an unknown number and to delete the message promptly. Individuals who logged in using one of these links are asked to contact their financial institution and update their passwords as soon as possible.
