Sharon Subbert of Scranton, formerly of Glidden

Sharon Kay Subbert, age 72, of Scranton, Iowa and formerly of Glidden, Iowa passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 28, 2023 in Huxley, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Carroll, Iowa with Rev. Cindy Johnson officiating. Music will be by Dennis Bruns. Casket bearers will be Ernie Schmeiser, Lincoln Schmeiser, Jody Boell, Bill VanZuiden, Theron Gale and Roger Graves. Honorary casket bearers will be Justin Sparks, Sara Sparks, Sydni Gale, Taylor Pevestorf, Kale Pevestorf, Caleb Sparks, Carter Sparks, Kiera Sparks, LaShaya Forkner, Amanda Lawrence and DaCoda Lawrence. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden.

Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden from 5-7 P.M. Tuesday evening with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:30 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M. prior to the service.

Sharon was born on December 24, 1950 in Carroll, Iowa to Otmar and Tena (Berns) Wenck. She attended Glidden-Ralston Community School graduating with the Class of 1969. In September of 1970 she was married to Russell Sparks and four children were born to this union. The couple later divorced and on June 6, 1987 she was united in marriage to Jerry Subbert in Jefferson, Iowa. Over the years, her life revolved around restaurant work and managed the Scranton Café. Sharon was also employed at General Electric in Carroll for six years before working for Sunny Fresh Foods in Panora for seven years. In September of 1992, she began employment at American Athletic, Inc. in Jefferson where she worked until she retired in early 2019 due to her failing health.

Sharon loved taking pictures of the sunrises, sunsets, lakeshores and eagles. One of her biggest hobbies was baking and decorating cakes for every occasion. Her grandkids knew her and called her “Grandma Cake”. She also cherished the time spent with her friends for the several lunch gatherings they had.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Jerry Subbert of Scranton; daughters, Karen (Emily) GaleHazen of Marshalltown and Kelly (Chris) Pevestorf of Coon Rapids; sons, Jeff (Karen) Sparks of Glidden and Christopher (Haley) Sparks of Huxley; stepdaughter, Cindy (Matt) Mohr of Scranton; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brother, Duane (Kathy) Wenck of Lidderdale; brother-in-law, Jack Schmeiser of Glidden; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Beatrice Wenck; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Art and Lillian Subbert; sisters, Shirley Nepper and Elaine Schmeiser; and brother Ronald Wenck.
