Iowa Crop Report: May 28, 2023

According to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Iowa Crop Progress and Condition report, only scattered acres of corn and soybeans remain to be planted. For the week ending May 28, dry and warm conditions left farmers with an average of 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. An estimated 98 percent of Iowa’s corn crop is now planted, eight days ahead of last year and 11 days ahead of the five-year average. Eighty-five percent of the corn crop has emerged, a week ahead of 2022 and the five-year average. The season’s first corn condition rating showed zero percent of corn fell in the very poor category, just two percent poor, 21 percent fair, and 77 percent good to excellent. About 94 percent of soybeans are planted, a week ahead of last year and two weeks ahead of normal. Two-thirds of beans have emerged, eight days ahead of last year and the five-year average. Soybean conditions rated one percent very poor, three percent poor, 25 percent fair, and 71 percent good to excellent.
