Iowa Raises Awareness On Tickborne Diseases During Lyme Disease Awareness Month

With warmer weather now here, Iowans are more likely to come across native creatures, which carries some risks if not adequately prepared. May is recognized as Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and it is important to know of the risks associated with tickborne diseases. Lyme disease is caused by bacteria transmitted through the bite of infected ticks. Last year in Iowa alone, 154 cases were reported throughout the state. Ticks are most active during their pre-adult stage, known as nymphs, and are commonly found in tall grasses and brush in wooded areas between May and July. To reduce your risk of potential exposure, remember to use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or other similar chemicals and wear long-sleeved clothing and pants when possible while outdoors. Regularly check for ticks, paying extra attention to areas like armpits, behind knees, hair, and groin. For more information on Lyme disease and tick prevention, follow the links included below.
