Wednesday’s Vietnam War Veterans Day Ceremony At Airport Draws Large Crowd

The hanger at Arthur N. Neu Airport in Carroll was near capacity as more than 100 individuals gathered Wednesday night to show their support for veterans on Vietnam War Veterans Day. Wednesday marked 50 years since the last U.S. combat troops departed the country in 1973. Wednesday’s ceremony lasted around 45 minutes and began with Bob Fasbender, a member of the Breda American Legion, thanking everyone for coming.

Fasbender also read the VFW National Vietnam War Veterans Day Proclamation in its entirety. He says reading that in front of so many other veterans, their families, and fellow countrymen was a great honor.

The Kuemper Catholic High School Band was in attendance and played America the Beautiful. Greg Siemann, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and is an active member of the Carroll Airport Commission, detailed the history of the memorial outside the airport that features an A7 Aircraft with the name of six Carroll County residents who lost their lives during the Vietnam War or never returned home.

According to Siemann, many individuals still have yet to be accounted for from the Vietnam War. The ceremony ended with placing a wreath on the memorial, a 21-gun salute, and Taps. Full audio from the event and pictures can be found included below.
