Community Members Gathered Wednesday Night To Honor Vietnam Veterans

The Arthur N. Neu Airport in Carroll was near total capacity as over 100 individuals showed their support for Vietnam War Veterans Wednesday night. The Vietnam War ended 50 years ago, in 1973. The ceremony lasted over a half hour, and Bob Fasbender opened the event by thanking everyone for coming.

Fasbender also read the VFW National Vietnam War Veterans Day Proclamation. He says it was a great honor to read that in front of many veterans.

The Kuemper Catholic High School Band was in attendance and played America the Beautiful. Greg Siemann, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and is an active member of the Carroll Airport Commission, spoke about the memorial outside the airport that features an A7 Aircraft with the name of six Carroll County residents who lost their lives during the Vietnam War.

According to Siemann, there are still 19 individuals that have yet to be accounted for during the war. The ceremony ended with the placing of the wreath and 21-gun salute and taps. Full audio from the event and pictures can be found included with this story on our website.
