Bird Flu Identified In Iowa For First Time Since January

After nearly two months without a confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the state, the Iowa Department of Agriculture has identified an outbreak in northeast Iowa. State officials say test results that were returned yesterday (Tuesday) show bird flu was found in a Chickasaw County backyard flock about 35 miles north of Waterloo. This is the first confirmed case in Iowa since Jan. 25, when an outbreak of HPAI was detected in a commercial turkey flock in Buena Vista County. Over 30 outbreaks have been identified since this latest spate of bird flu in Iowa began more than a year ago. To date, more than 58.61 million birds have been affected by HPAI in the U.S., including nearly 16 million in Iowa. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the recent HPAI detections in birds do not present a public health concern. It remains safe to eat poultry products.
