IASB Sets Priorities For 2023 Legislative Session

Last week, the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) announced its legislative priorities for the upcoming 2023 session. Board representatives from around the state gathered at the annual IASB Delegate Assembly to craft and approve their public policy agenda and highlight the issues they believe legislators need to take action on at the state house. IASB Board President Jim Green says, “As school board members, we know that our primary responsibility is student achievement. Our leadership at the board table and our advocacy at the statehouse can make a difference for Iowa students. We call on our elected officials to put in place education policies and investments that can help students discover their full potential and reach a successful future.” Delegates approved a slate of policies that calls for additional support of student literacy goals, improving teacher workforce to enhance student achievement, expanding diverse and engaging educational opportunities at public schools, offering student, educator, and staff mental health initiatives, and increasing transparency and accountability from districts if they expect to receive taxpayer funds. IASB represents 327 Iowa public school districts, nine area education agencies, and 15 community colleges.
