Area Students Benefit From Jeff And Deb Hansen Foundation’s Power Snack Program

More than 100 Iowa schools are receiving supplies to help fight childhood hunger through the Deb & Jeff Hansen Foundation. Approximately one in eight children face food insecurity, and the foundation, with Iowa Select Farms, is continuing its efforts to enact change. Their Power Snack program provides ham and bread coupons and pork sticks to teachers and schools to distribute to students in need. The Deb & Jeff Hansen Foundation finished delivering those supplies last week to 112 schools and 21,150 students. Local districts involved in the program include: Paton-Churdan, Carroll Community, Greene County, East Sac County, IKM-Manning, South Central Calhoun, Coon Rapids-Bayard, and Ar-We-Va. Program Manager Madison Lafrenz says, “We are eager to be back on the road visiting schools for this year’s Power Snack and are dedicated to continuing the fight against childhood hunger in Iowa. Teachers submit to use the number of students considered at-risk for food insecurity, which can vary by community. Sometimes it is 20 percent of total school enrollment, other times it is 80 percent. We repeatedly hear feedback from teachers and nurses that our program positively impacts the lives of these children and their families.” The Power Snack initiative is now in its tenth year and provides enough supplies for over 1,00,000 ham sandwiches each year.
