Leslie “Les” Butler of Carroll

Leslie “Les” Allen Butler, age 91, of Carroll, IA, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 10, 2022.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M. on Friday, October 14, 2022 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Schott as Celebrant.   Gift bearers will be Les’ grandchildren.  Casket bearers will be Les’ family members. 
Visitation will be held at St. Lawrence Church from 9:30 – 10:45 A.M. on Friday prior to the Mass. 
An honor guard will be formed by the Carroll Area Law Enforcement.   A graveside service will be held at 12:30pm on Saturday at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with full military honors conducted by the United States Airforce.

Les was born on March 15, 1931 in Carroll, IA, and he was the son of David and Anna (Brandt) Butler.  He grew up in Carroll and graduated from Carroll High School in 1949.  Following high school, Les worked several local jobs before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served 21 years during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.  He attained the rank of Chief Master Sargent.  On his first leave, he was married to Rose Marie Niehaus on September 15, 1952 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll by Fr. Poeckes.  Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Les returned to Carroll and worked as an officer for the Carroll Police Department for 16 years.  In retirement, Les worked as an EMT for Carroll Ambulance Service, he did private investigating work, sold real estate, and he worked for Sharp Funeral Home.  Les was a lifelong member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church.  He enjoyed fishing, going for airplane rides, camping, traveling, working in his yard, but most of all spending time with his family. 
Les is survived by his wife Rose of 70 years of Carroll; daughter Kyla Gehm of Johnston, IA; son David Butler of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren: Molly Gehm of Des Moines and Austin Gehm (Dena) of West Des Moines; a great-grandson Luca; his in-laws: Larry Gillis (Letha) of Ohio, Mary Niehaus of Storm Lake, Leota Ryan of North Carolina, and several nieces and nephews.
Les was preceded in death by his parents David and Anna Butler; his father and mother-in-law Louis and Marie Niehaus; a sister Lois Cline (Dale); and in-laws: Bernie Andrews (Wayne), Don Niehaus, and Merle Niehaus.
