Jan was born on March 2, 1938 in Alta, IA, and she was the daughter of
James D. and Verna A. (Miller) Prentice.  She grew up in Alta and Holstein before moving to Carroll with her parents in the early 1940’s. Jan graduated from Carroll High School in 1956.  Upon graduation she worked for Alfred J. Klocke at the County Clerk’s office, before going to work at the Commercial Savings Bank.  Jan worked at Commercial Savings Bank until her marriage to Reese R. Abbe on June 22, 1959.  Subsequent years were spent raising her family, helping her parents at the Garden of Gifts, and studying art with Master teachers throughout the US.  In 1980, she opened her art studio and began teaching decorative art.  After a fire destroyed the Garden of Gifts in 1988, she combined the love of art and the gift business of her parents and established a gift and decorating business specializing in interior design.  In 1990, Reese and Jan moved to the Minchen House and expanded their businesses.  Jan received the status of Allied Member of the American Society of Interior Design in 1995. Jan performed interior design services and renovations of many homes throughout the area, including Omaha and Des Moines.  She participated in several Symphony showhouses in Omaha.  Jan was a member of the Carroll Chamber of Commerce, ASID and numerous other trade associations.
Jan is survived by Paul (Marie) Abbe of Pine Hurst, NC; Scott (Pam) Abbe of Chandler, AZ; Steve (Linda) Abbe of Maywood, IL; grandchildren Emelia (Bryce) Robertson, Julia Abbe, James Abbe, and Kathryn Abbe; and great-grandson Everett Robertson.
Jan is preceded in death by her parents Jim and Verna Prentice, her husband Reese Abbe and a son, Clark Abbe.
