According to a recent report released by a driver’s education provider, Iowa is one of the safest states for teen drivers. Researchers at Zutobi reviewed 2020 data gathered from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Fatality and Injury Reporting System (FIRST) to compile their rankings. Iowa was ranked as the 11th safest state in the nation with a teen driver fatality rate of 14.2 per 100,000 licensed teens. In 2020, male drivers were involved in nearly three times more fatal crashes compared to females, 14 to 5. The three leading causes of deadly traffic accidents are alcohol consumption, speeding, and distracted driving. Iowa ranked 18th for total impaired driving deaths with five and 17th for distracted driving with two in 2020. Safety officials note teenage drivers develop habits from their instructors, so it is critical that parents or licensed adults in the car practice and teach young motorists safe driving practices. Data shows Kentucky was the least safe state for teenage drivers with 71.45 deaths per 100,000 adolescent drivers. Minnesota was the safest with just 9.52 deaths per 100,000.
