Flags Ordered To Half-Staff Friday For The Return Of Iowan Killed At Pearl Harbor

Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered flags in Iowa to half-staff on Friday, May 13, recognizing an Iowan’s return home after nearly 80 years. Navy Storekeeper 3rd Class, Harry E. Nichols of Sioux City, was killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Nichols was on the USS Oklahoma when it capsized, and his remains were recently identified and shipped home. He was 21 years old at the time of his death. Flags will be at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the State Capitol Building, flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same time as a sign of respect. Services will be held Friday morning in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.
