John was born December 20,1929 near Bayard, Iowa to Charles and Addie (Patterson) Arrowsmith. John grew up the middle of 14 children. He told fond stories of time spent with his brothers in the timber on the farm where they lived, always including that it was his job to take his Granddad Patterson to the river fishing, a chore he loved. He attended Bayard Consolidated School; kindergarten through 11th grade, then a change in district boundaries had him graduating his senior year from Coon Rapids Municipal School with the class of 1947.

He worked for several Bayard and Coon Rapids area farmers, Armour Creamery and Lynn’s Feed Service before retiring after 25 years as Bayard then Coon Rapids Bayard Schools maintenance/custodian.  John married Deanne Schultes Bauer on January 6,1984 in Carroll and moved to Glidden with her and stepchildren Marty and Dawn. He was proud of serving on the city councils in Bayard and Glidden, and as mayor of Bayard.  John mastered many skills and hobbies, woodworking, refinishing furniture, gardening and being a collector of treasures.
