MidAmerican Energy Announces $3.9 Billion Renewable Energy Project Coming To Iowa

MidAmerican Energy Company announced Wednesday, details of upcoming plans for a $3.9 billion renewable energy project in Iowa. The projects include substantial expansions in their wind and solar energy generation , along with technologies to expand the company’s transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The project is called Wind Prime and would add 2,042 megawatts of wind generation along with 50 megawatts of solar generation. Since 2004 Mid American Energy has invested nearly $14 billion in renewable energy projects in Iowa, and with Wind Prime, they will continue to support Iowa communities while advancing as the state leader in renewable resources. Wind Prime is MidAmerican Energy’s 13th renewable energy development. In 2021 the company estimated they delivered 88 percent renewable energy to customers. Wind Prime would deliver 100 percent renewable energy, and the project will create more than 1,100 full time jobs during the construction phase with an additional 125 in ongoing operations and maintenance. Wind Prime will provide on average $24 million per year in local property tax payments on wind turbines and solar facilities. The project must be approved by the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB). If approved MidAmerican Energy plans to complete construction in late 2024.
