Kenneth Auen of Carroll

Kenneth Paul Auen, age 90, of Carroll, IA, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.

   Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Deacon David Prenger officiating.  Pall bearers will be Kenny’s grandchildren.  Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

    Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 1 – 2 P.M. on Thursday prior to the service.

    Kenny was born on September 24, 1931 in Carroll, IA, and he was the son of Peter and Henrietta (Stoffel) Auen.  He grew up in Carroll where he graduated from Carroll High School in 1949 where he was an excellent athlete playing on conference championship teams in baseball and football.  Kenny was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Heitman on July 14, 1952 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton.  He served in the National Guard following high school and then worked at Farner – Bocken for several years and then Metz Baking Company/Old Home Bread for over 35 years retiring in 1992.  He then worked part time for his cousins Dave and Jim Auen at Auen Distrubuting for 16 years retiring in 2008.  Kenny was a member of the Teamsters Union and served as a district representative.  He served on the Carroll Volunteer Fire Department for over 40 years retiring in 1994.  Kenny coached little league and umpired for many years, and he co-founded the Carroll Senior Little League with Maury Nurse in 1967.  He enjoyed reading, hunting, coin collecting, golf, watching college football and westerns, and spending time with his family.

     Kenny is survived by his three children and their families: Stephen Auen of Missoula, MT; Debra Beiter of Urbandale; and Thomas Auen (Beth) of West Des Moines; six grandchildren: Nick Beiter Jr. (Alicia) of Urbandale, Michael Beiter (Bridget) of Waukee, Jacob and Haley Auen of West Des Moines, and Josh (Sarah) and Jason (Kristin) Tack of Montana; three great-grandchildren: Beckett and Hudson Beiter and Sawyer Tack; a brother Dennis Auen of Carroll; a sister-in-law Pat Larsen of Abilene, TX; a brother-in-law Mel Dorpinghaus of Maumelle, AR; and several nieces and nephews.

     Kenny was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Henrietta Auen; his father and mother-in-law Tony and Barbara Heitman; two sisters: Patricia Millhollin (Tom) and Mary Lou Dorpinghaus; a daughter-in-law Jeanne Auen; and his wife Shirley Auen on March 21, 2021.
