The application process for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is open now through Friday, Dec. 17. This is a small window of opportunity for the preparation and filing of an application and Region XII Council of Governments has some tips for getting started. The first step is to update the city’s SAM.gov registration. They remind everyone the application process cannot begin until the city is registered and active in the SAM system. The departments should also review their equipment, gear and vehicle needs and conditions. The most competitive applications will have completely documented the existing condition of equipment and why the department needs to update it or add to it. Departments should also obtain an informal cost quote as the winning applications will need to supply formal bidding. Last year’s program received more than 8,150 applications with only 2,220 awards distributed. Region XII will also assist with the application process at no charge to the fire department.
