Monte Mac Hook was born on November 4, 1935 in Lake City, IA and he was the son of Levi and Ethel (Garrells) Hook.  He grew up in Auburn on his family’s farm and took pride in learning and helping run the farm. He went to Auburn High School where he met the love of his life, Evelyn Jacobs.  Monte has always been Evelyn’s biggest cheerleader. It all started while Evelyn was playing basketball and Monte was cheering on the sidelines in his cheerleading uniform.  After high school, Monte was a mechanic in Sac City.  Before moving to the farm near Lidderdale, Monte and Evelyn said “I do” on June 5, 1955.  At the farm, they raised their four children, Randy, Doug, Pam, and Candi along with the many animals. Monte was a true cowboy with his lasso and his trusty horse Red. He was Evelyn’s loving and sole caregiver until the very end.

Saturday nights were a happening time when Monte and Evelyn got together with friends to go dancing or to play cards.  Monte was always busy with the farm, buying cattle, and driving semi-trucks.  Monte was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale where he served as a Trustee and Elder. He also served as a board member for the Immanuel Lutheran Christian School. Monte enjoyed going to Wyoming and South Dakota to buy cattle and driving truck.  He enjoyed making many friends and memories on his adventures. Monte always had the best stories about these adventures and he enjoyed telling all of the grandchildren and great grandchildren.  If he wasn’t taking an adventure, you could find him tinkering around on his Cub Cadets.  Family was everything to Monte and he loved having his family around and being able to watch it grow. One of his favorite past times was talking on the phone with friends and family.

Monte thought a hot toddy would fix all ailments as he was always offering one as the best form of medicine, especially sitting at home listening to Paul Harvey with the family. So in Paul Harvey’s words, “Now you know… the rest of the story”

Monte is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his children and their families: Doug (Karen) Hook of Carroll, IA, Pam Hook of Fort Dodge, IA, Candi (Bill) Rotert of Waterloo, NE; eight grandchildren: Josh Kruthoff, Nikki (Kenton) Ewing, Dustin Hook, Travis Hook, Nathan Hook, Kyle (Travis Verbeck) Rotert, Madison (Rishabh Ajmera) Hook, Dannielle Hook; four great-grandchildren: Tisyn, Karsyn, Paisley, and Jackson.

Monte was preceded in death by his son Randy; his brother, Ronnie; and his parents, Levi and Ethel Hook.
