Lake View City Council Approves Request From Local American Legion To Include Space Force At Veterans Memorial In Speaker Park

The Lake View City Council has approved a request from local veterans to add the newest branch of the military, the U.S. Space Force, to the Veterans Memorial in Speaker Park. Administrator, Scott Peterson, says representatives from the Eilert Auen American Legion Post #133 approached the city with the idea earlier this year.

As the Veterans Memorial is overseen by the Lake View Parks and Recreation Board, Peterson says the council wanted to consult with them first.

Initial estimates show it will cost approximately $2,500, including the flag, pole and labor, to include the new branch at the Veterans Memorial. Unfortunately, Peterson says there just is not enough time to have the pole installed before Veterans Day on Nov. 11. However, he is confident they will have the new pole and flag ready for display by Memorial Day next year.  The memorial itself features the official seal for each branch of the military, but it would require substantial, and likely costly, alterations to include Space Force on the physical structure. There are currently no plans to change the memorial at this time, but the council may consider doing so in the future.
