Edwin “Ed” Halbur of Coon Rapids

Edwin “Ed” Henry Halbur, age 94, of Coon Rapids, IA, passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at his home in Coon Rapids surrounded by his family.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids with nephew Fr. Merlin Schrad as Celebrant assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners.  Music for the Mass will be by Diane Slater and the Annunciation Choir.  Gift Bearers will be Ed’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Casket bearers will be Ed’s grandsons.  Honorary casket bearers will be his granddaughters.  Burial will be in the Coon Rapids Cemetery with military honors by the Coon Rapids American Legion and United States Navy.
Visitation will be held at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids from 5 – 7 P.M. on Wednesday where there will be a Rosary at 6:30 P.M.  Additional Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 – 10:15 A.M. on Thursday prior to the Mass.

Ed was born on February 18, 1927 in Carroll, IA, and he was the son of Bernard and Margaret (Steffes) Halbur.  He grew up on his family’s farm near Halbur, IA, where he attended school.  He enlisted in the United States Navy following his schooling and was stationed in the Philippines during WWII.  Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Halbur and continued to farm.  Ed was married to Bernice Heithoff on September 6, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton by Fr. Schultes.  The couple farmed northeast of Manning until 1956 when they bought a farm southwest of Coon Rapids where they raised their family.  Ed retired from farming in 2009 and they moved into Coon Rapids.  He dearly loved his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his cattle, riding his four-wheeler, and the Molly B. Polka Show.  Ed and Bernice hosted a week long “Cousins Camp” every summer which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Ed is survived by his wife Bernice of 72 years of Coon Rapids; his children and their families: daughter Joyce Dowell (Jim) of Kansas City, MO, son Don Halbur (Val) of Springfield, MO, son Dave Halbur (Chris McKenney) of Coon Rapids, son Rick Halbur (Nadine) of Adel, daughter Judy Oswald (Mike) of Coon Rapids, daughter Jan Holdsworth (Mark) of Manilla, son Doug Halbur (Lisa) of Omaha, and son Denny Halbur (Julie) of Coon Rapids; nineteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; a sister Rita Sporrer (Harold) of Manning; sisters-in-law: Eileen Halbur of Manning, Vi Rohe of Manning, Edna Schrad of Templeton, Margaret Heithoff of Carroll, and Millie Heithoff of Carroll; many nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Margaret Halbur; his father and mother-in-law Joseph and Martha Heithoff; three sisters: Martha Rohe (Vernon), Helen Loeffelholz (Walt), and Agnes Schwaller (Jerry); two brothers: Leander and Louis Halbur (Agnes); four sisters-in-law: Bonita Sporrer (John), Irene Richter (Mike), Rita Simons (Joe), and Ruth Brown (LeRoy); five brothers-in-law: Linus Heithoff (Marge), Marvin Heithoff (Esther), Virgil Heithoff, Eugene Heithoff, and Sam Schrad; and his son Dale Halbur in 1998.
