Two Coon Rapids natives put their software engineering experience to good use during the pandemic and created an app that keeps people up-to-date on events. Jake Zanders says the idea for collaborating on “Neighbored” came about a year-and-a-half ago from his life-long friend, Sam Honold.

Zanders says they started with the look and the aesthetics with the goal of creating a simple, sleek, clean user interface. He says they wanted to emphasize the usability. Honold explains what the app does.

Honold says there are any number of people who can post events on the app.

Organic growth is one of the goals according to Zanders.

There are three versions of the free app available: the App Store version for iOS devices; a Google Play version for Android users; and a web application at neighboredllcapp.com, which is a progressive web app that can be downloaded to a computer. Honold says, at present, they are only charging communities enough to cover Google Cloud hosting fees. In the future, the ability to expand could provide a source of revenue, but Zanders says profit is not their main concern.

The app is only showing events in Carroll County now, but it is configured for expansion to allow for events from anywhere to be posted. The app will then use a locator on the device to bring the user details about what is happening where they are. Honold now lives in Cedar Rapids and is a generation engineer for Central Iowa Power Cooperative. Zanders is a self-taught software engineer and moved to Phoenix, Ariz. in January of this year to pursue an engineering career.
