Routine Traffic Stop Leads To Felony Drug Charge For Storm Lake Woman

A Storm Lake woman arrested on an outstanding warrant now faces additional charges after bringing narcotics into the Buena Vista County jail. At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, the Storm Lake Police Department conducted a routine traffic stop on a vehicle driven by 23-year-old Maritza Maldonado. Authorities learned of the mittimus warrant from a prior conviction and took her into custody. According to law enforcement, a small amount of cocaine was found concealed on her person during the booking process, resulting in charges of introducing a controlled substance into a correctional facility, a class D felony, and possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor. She is also charged with driving under a suspended license, a simple misdemeanor. As of Monday afternoon, Maldonado remained in custody and is being held without bond.
