Attorney General Warns Iowans To Be Wary Of Contractor Scams

After rounds of severe weather hit parts of the state in the past month, Iowa Attorney General, Tom Miller, is warning residents to be wary of “storm chasers” who come to towns after these events. These are often out-of-state contractors who swoop into neighborhoods, going door-to-door, offering their services to repair home damage and clean up debris. “Contractors will try to take advantage of homeowners’ desperation,” Miller warns. “Consumers should take the time to research contractors who come to their door selling services, and be wary of pitches and promises that seem too good to be true.” The Federal Trade Commission says there are some signs to look out for that could indicate you are dealing with a scammer. It is a red flag to have someone knock on your door and offer work because they happen to be “in your area.” These contractors say they have materials left over from another job or they pressure you to make an immediate decision. Scammers will often ask for all payment up front or they may say they only accept cash. A scammer could also ask the home owner to obtain any required permits and may even suggest you borrow money from a lender they know. Miller cautions all to guard their personal information and check out any and all contractors. Request proof of insurance, identification and licenses. Finally, never pay by wire transfer, gift cards or in cash. If you believe you have been the victim of such a scam, contact local law enforcement and file a claim witu the Iowa Attorney General’s office through the contact points included below.
