The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is monitoring the clean-up following an emergency landing of a crop duster Tuesday south of Carroll. Prior to that emergency landing, several gallons of pesticide were jettisoned near a private residence southwest of Swan Lake State Park. The pilot, 50-year-old Lauren Greenhoff of Dell Rapids, S.D., told authorities he released about 10 gallons of Lorsban and six gallons of Capture about an eighth of a mile from the park, near 220th Street and Mahogany Avenue. The DNR is asking people to avoid the area while their investigation and clean-up continue. They are also saying there are potential health risks to anyone who has direct contact with quantities of these chemicals. Anyone with questions about possible exposure is asked to call the Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222. The DNR will continue to oversee clean-up and may take appropriate enforcement action. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship are also investigating the incident. Tuesday’s emergency landing was reported at approximately 4:54 p.m. when the Airtractor AT-401 aircraft, registered to Central Ag, LLC of Corsica, S.D., suffered an apparent engine failure. The pilot was uninjured.
