MVAOCOU at Kuemper – Class 2A District 16 Semifinals

Kuemper      13

MVAOCOU     3         (5 Innings)

Kuemper got the job done Tuesday Night as they defeated MVAO-COU to advance to the district championship game.

The MVAO-COU Rams got off to a good start in the top of the first, getting the first run of the game and leading 1-0. Kuemper responded to that solo run with six of their own in the bottom of the first inning. The Knights got three hits all together in their first at bats, but were aided by errors on the Rams defense to get up 6-1 after the first inning was over. Both the Rams and Knights were unable to add runs in the second inning. Cal Wanninger was partially to thank because of that, as in his four innings on the hill, he allowed two earned runs off four hits, three walks, all while recording six strikeouts.

The Rams fought back against the Kuemper lead with another solo run scored in the top of the third inning, cutting the lead down to 6-2. Kuemper’s response to that run didn’t come until the bottom of the fourth, where they got their hitting success back with six more runs scored. Logan Sibenaller did well offensively, going 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Blake Pottebaum and Austin TIgges both went 1-3 and scored two runs with a stolen base to boot. Kuemper jumped out to a 12-2 lead heading into the fifth. The Rams chipped away again at the Knight lead with another solo run, cutting the lead down to 12-3. But Kuemper’s offense continued to roll in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Pottebaum was on third base when a wild pitch hit the ground and came off awkwardly off the catcher’s glove, allowing Michael to score the game-winning run for Kuemper, ending it in five innings at 13-3.

Kuemper extends their season record to 21-6-1 with this win. The Knights host the District Championship match as they face off against Panorama.

Colo-Nesco at Coon Rapids Bayard – Class 1A District 12 Semifinals

Coon Rapids Bayard    15

Colo-Nesco                        5           (6 Innings)

Coon Rapids Bayard saw some trouble brewing in the top of the fifth inning against Colo-Nesco Tuesday night, but a few changes on defense allowed the Crusaders to get back on track to defeat the Royals and advance to the district championship.

Colo-Nesco in their first two innings of at bats got a runner on third in the first and a runner at first in the second inning, but both were left on base after Coon Rapids Bayard had a strong defensive start. The Crusaders also started well on offense, seeing Easton Hays get home off the reach on error from Lance Clayburg and Preston McAlister got home off an error at third base. The biggest inning for the Crusaders was yet to come, as they extended their lead further in the bottom of the third.

Easton Hays started off the offense for Coon Rapids Bayard as he drove a homerun ball to left-center field. After Kolby Culbertson struck-out, the next six batter all got on base and later scored, giving Coon Rapids Bayard the 9-0 advantage. Most of the runs scored by Coon Rapids Bayard were scored on errors by the Royal’s defense. Tanner Oswald got an RBI single to get a runner home and Hays had a sac fly for an RBI, the lone two RBIs in a seven run inning for the Crusaders. Colo-Nesco started to chip away at the Coon Rapids Bayard lead, starting in the top of the fourth with a run scored in part due to an error caused by Quentin Culbertson when he tried to throw to Josh Ramirez at first. That cut the Crusader lead down to 9-1.

The big inning for Colo-Nesco was the top of the fifth where they took advantage of a rocky Crusader defensive inning to score four runners. The Royals got back-to-back singles to start their offense off, and followed that up with an RBI single, scored off of a bases loaded walked batter, and a 2 RBI single, cutting down the Crusader lead significantly to 9-5. Head Coach John Waddle commented on that situation in the post game interview and said it was a challenge his team needed to come back from together, and he believes they rose up and conquered the challenge. The Crusaders got Hays home once again off an Aaron McAlister RBI single, extending their lead to 10-5. The Crusaders were able to score the final five runs they needed to end the game in six innings. Gabe Obert started off the bottom of the sixth with a double and was scored by Preston McAlister with an RBI single. Quentin Culbertson got on base with a single and East Hays loaded up the bases by being walked. Kolby Culbertson got a runner home by being walked and gave the Crusaders the 12-5 advantage. Aaron McAlister was the game ender as he crushed a three RBI double to score Tanner Oswald, Hays, and Culbertson to defeat Colo-Nesco in six innings 15-5.

The Crusaders improve to 23-8 overall on the season. Coon Rapids Bayard will host Saturday’s District 12 Championship game where they will face off against Ogden.

Audubon At LoMa- Class 1A District 15 Semifinals

LoMa 4

Audubon 3

LoMa swept the regular season series by a combined 22-0. Tuesday was a different story as the Wheelers came in off their best performance of the season and nearly matched that. The Wheelers got a great start from Joel Klocke on the hill, a solid defense performance and scored more runs in the 6th inning that they did in the regular season matchups. Gavin Smith and Joel Klocke had clutch hits in the 6th to put the Wheelers six outs from advancing into Saturday District final. LoMa rallied in the 6th and then escaped by scoring a run in the 7th to win.

The Panthers had a runner on 2nd base in each of the first three innings but Audubon held them to one run. Joel Klocke gave up 4 hits through 3 innings and walked one and it was the walk that came back to hurt them. Joe Hedger who was matching Klocke pitch for pitch drew a two out walk. He moved to 2nd base on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error,  on what would have been the 3rd out in the 3rd inning. An error in the 5th put the leadoff hitter in Jacob Fetter on base. Kaleb Hatcher bunted him to 2nd and he scored on a single by Hedger, putting the Panthers up 2-0.

Joe Hedger had been really good through 5 innings for LoMa, allowing 3 hits. The Panthers made a change to start the 6th and Tre Melby entered the game. Melby had held Audubon down in both of their regular season matchups but he came out and struggled early to find a rhythm. Braden Wessel and Ethan Klocke walked with one out setting the stage. Gavin Smith ripped a shot,  deep to right field for a triple, scoring both Wessel and Klocke. Smith scored moments later when Joel Klocke singled to right field. The Wheelers grabbed a 3-2 lead.

LoMa quickly responded in the bottom 6th. Evan Roden singled and moved to 2nd on an error, Jarett Armstrong singled loading the bases.  Jacob Fetter singled to score Roden and the game was tied 3-3 heading to the 7th. Audubon was able to escape, giving up just 1 run. The Wheelers nearly took advantage of a pair of walks to Teddy DuVall and Braden Wessel with 2 outs in the 7th. DuVall worked his way to 3rd and Wessel was at 2nd base but Melby got out of trouble without any damage done.

Melby walked with one out bottom 7th, stole 2nd base and moved to 3rd on a fielders choice, sliding under the tag. Audubon intentionally walked Evan Roden to load the bases with one out, setting up a home to 1st double play. Brody West ended the game with a fly ball to centerfield scoring Melby from 3rd.

The Wheelers finished with 5 hits, led by Gavin Smith with 2 hits, a triple and 2 RBI. Joel Klocke, Gavin Larsen and Cooper Nielsen each singled with Klocke picking up an RBI. Joel Klocke pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and 3 runs but only 1 was earned.

The Wheelers finish the season 10-17.

Regular Season

Carroll At Fort Dodge

Fort Dodge 10

Carroll 7

Carroll wrapped up the regular season with an amazing comeback that ended just short of getting them a road win. The Tigers were down 8-2 after the 1st inning but  cut it to 9-7 after the 4th inning. Slade Sibenaller crushed a pair of pitches with one of them landing on a roof across the street from the ballpark. Cade Schable came in to pitch in the 2nd inning and helped slow down the Dodger offense giving Carroll a chance to rally.

Slade Sibenaller hit his first of two home runs in the 1st inning, giving Carroll a 2-0 lead. Fort Dodge responded in their half of the inning, hitting the ball hard, scoring 8-runs. Sibenaller got Carroll back in the game with a 3-run home run in the 2nd inning making it 8-5. An RBI single by Ryan Johnston in the 4th helped cut into the lead and Ty Nissen finished the Tigers scoring on a wild pitch in the 4th. Carroll trailed 9-7. They wouldn’t score the rest of the game though Tory Feldman nearly hit a home run to lead off the 7th. Fort Dodge scored a run in the 3rd and added their final run in the 6th inning.

Slade Sibenaller had a huge game at the plate with 2 home runs and 5 RBI. He scored twice and was walked twice. The Tigers finished with 7 hits with Ty Nissen, Colby Christensen, Tory Feldman, Ryan Johnston and Jireh Gallegos all singling. Ty Nissen scored 3 runs.

The loss wraps up the regular season for Carroll at 12-19. The Tigers open their postseason on Friday at Denison Schleswig.
