Kuemper Softball Moves On To Regional Semifinals After Defeating Panorama Wednesday; Ar-We-Va, Audubon, East Sac, and SCC See Seasons Come to an End

Regional Playoff Softball Results for July 7th, 2021

Panorama at Kuemper

Kuemper     5

Panorama   3

Kuemper’s Camryn Venner put her team on her back Wednesday night, getting back-to-back strikeouts to advance the Knights to Friday’s Class 2A Region 3 Semifinal match.

Panorama got their offense off to a good start early on, grabbing the early 1-0 lead off an RBI single. Kuemper had a strong response to that run in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Schwabe was able to score when Kenzie Schon distracted the Panorama defense as she stole second; Schwabe scored the tying run at 1-1. Brianna Lux gave Kuemper their first lead of the game as she crushed a home run hit to left center field over the fence to score herself and Kenzie Schon, giving the Knights the 3-1 lead.

Chloe Venteicher in the top of the second limited the Panorama offense as she recorded a strikeout and grabbed a line drive right toward her for the 1-2-3 inning. Kuemper continued their strong offensive showing in the bottom of the second with Kyndal Hilgenberg being walked and Hailey Ostrander hitting a single. Schwabe got both runners home with a hard hit RBI double, giving Kuemper the 5-1 lead. Panorama went one more inning going three up and three down on offense, but in the fourth inning they started to chip away at Kuemper’s lead.

The Panthers scored a runner off an RBI double in the top of the fourth, taking the Kuemper lead down to 5-2. Panorama’s defense started to slow down the Kuemper offense, shutting down the scoring for Keumper from the third inning on. Panorama added another run in the top of the fifth off an RBI single, continuing to gain traction on the Kuemper lead, cut down to 5-3.

Kuemper held on in the top of the sixth defensively as Camryn Venner took Venteicher’s place in the circle from the fifth inning on. Venner started her night with three strikeouts in the fifth and added another one in the top of the sixth. Kuemper left Hilgenberg on third and Ostrander at first unable to extend their lead in the bottom of the sixth, so Venner was called up close out the game in the top of the seventh. Venner tossed over a grounder to Schon for out one, and then she got back-to-back swinging strikeouts to give Kuemper the 5-3 victory and move them on to Friday’s semifinal matchup.

Kuemper improves to 23-13 overall on the season and they will take on either Earlham or ACGC at Earlham on Friday, July 9th.

Ar-We-Va at St Edmond

St Edmond     4

Ar-We-Va        3

The bottom of the sixth was tough defensively for Ar-We-Va as their season came to an end, falling to St. Edmond Wednesday night.

St. Edmond got their offense going in the bottom of the first by scoring a solo runner and took an early 1-0 lead. Ar-We-Va responded well in the top of the second inning with Jadeyn Smith scoring off an overthrown ball and Timberlen Koch scoring a runner with an RBI single, giving the Rockets the 2-1 lead. After both teams failed to add runs to the board in the third inning, St. Edmond came back in the fourth to tie up the ball game at 2-2 off a grounder.

Ar-We-Va’s offense came alive once again in the top of the fifth where Sara Schurke scored off Maggie Ragaller’s sacrifice hit to give the Rockets the lead once again at 3-2. St. Edmond in the bottom of the fifth was unable to add runs, as was Ar-We-Va in the top of the sixth. Bottom of the sixth for St. Edmond ended up being a game changer where the Gaels got two runners home off an RBI double and a run off an RBI single giving the Gaels the 4-3 lead late. Ar-We-Va got runners on base, but three strikeouts gave St. Edmond the 4-3 win and advanced to the next round of regional play. Ar-We-Va’s season comes to an end with a final record of 10-11.

Audubon at Exira-EHK

Exira-EHK    1

Audubon       0

In a low scoring affair, Audubon out-hit Exira-EHK, but couldn’t find ways to score as their season came to an end Wednesday night.

The early game for both sides was competitive defensively as Exira-EHK was able to squeeze past the Audubon defense off a sacrifice bunt to score the first and only run of the contest, leading 1-0. Kali Irlmeier in the circle for Audubon performed well by limiting the Exira-EHK offense to two hits while recording three strikeouts and not allowing an earned run. Kali Irlmeier in the second inning got on base to get the Audubon offense started off, but was stranded after back-to-back strikeouts ended the half inning for the Wheelers. Addie Hocker and Mattie Nielsen were in scoring position at second and third, but once again were left on base after a good defensive inning by Exira-EHK.

While Exira-EHK was unable to add any runs to their 1-0 lead, they kept Audubon at bay and stopped opportunities for them to score. The Spartans finished off the Wheelers to win this low scoring affair 1-0. Audubon’s season comes to an end with a final record of 15-11.

East Sac at Hinton

Hinton      1

East Sac   0

East Sac had a close and competitive game against Hinton, but were unable to pull out the win as their season came to an end Wednesday night.

The lone score of the contest from Hinton was set up from an error in right field to bring the runner to third base, and the runner scored off an RBI single to take the 1-0 lead for Hinton in the bottom of the second. East Sac was able to rattle off five hits in this game as a team, but struggled to score runners. Shelby Geery for the Raiders in the circle went six innings pitched giving up a low five hits and the single run scored while recording a strikeout while her defense played well all game long. Hinton kept East Sac’s offense at bay as they held onto their 1-0 lead to win and advance to the next round of the regional playoffs.

South Hamilton at South Central Calhoun

South Hamilton                12

South Central Calhoun     2

South Central Calhoun got plenty of opportunities to score runs, but saw difficulties driving in base runners as their season came to an end against South Hamilton Wednesday night.

Both teams escaped the first inning without breaking through with a run, but South Central Calhoun had a good chance to take the lead in the bottom of the second. The Titans got three hits and loaded up the bases in their half inning of offense, but were unable to bring any home to keep the game scoreless. South Hamilton rode off their defensive inning with a five run inning in the top of the third. South Hamilton was aided by three South Central Calhoun errors as they also got three hits and left the bases loaded, but took the 5-0 lead.

Emma Anderson gave the Titans a run in the bottom of the third that cut down the South Hamilton lead to 5-1. After two more scoreless innings from both teams, South Hamilton got more runs added to their lead in the top of the sixth to take the 8-1 lead. That score gap was closed slightly by Olivia Toms who scored for the Titans in the bottom of the sixth cutting down the South Hamilton lead to 8-2. South Hamilton widened the gap once again with a four run offensive inning in the top of the seventh, taking the 12-2 lead. Despite getting 14 hits on the night offensively, South Central Calhoun couldn’t capitalize when the bases were loaded as they fell to South Hamilton by a final score of 12-2.
