Evelyn Mary Long of Coon Rapids

Evelyn Mary Long, age 95, of Coon Rapids, IA, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 14, 2021 at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids surrounded by her family.

     Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids with Fr. Patrick Behm as Celebrant assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners.  Organist for the Mass will be Diane Slater.   Lector for the Mass will be Jerry Kult.  Gift bearers will be Jennifer Tonko, Teresa Olson, Maria Wilson, Jessica Grote, Kim Kult and Nichole Gust.  Casket bearers will be Fred Long Jr, Jerry Kult, Larry Snyder, Keegan Kult, Paul Olson, Todd Wilson, Sean Tonko, and Greyson Gust.  Burial will be in Orange Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids.

     Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids from 5 – 7 P.M. on Friday evening.  The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until 9:45 A.M.

     Evelyn was born on August 29, 1925 on her family’s farm in Shelby County, (Portsmouth), IA, and she was the daughter of Peter Francis and Mary Margaret (Theilen) Leinen.  Evelyn grew up on the farm and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Portsmouth in 1943.  She traveled back and forth to Coon Rapids by train where she worked in a restaurant.  She was married to Fred Long on September 4, 1948 in Coon Rapids.  The couple lived and worked together on three farms in the Coon Rapids area.  They retired from farming in the fall of 1977 and moved to 624 Walnut Street in Coon Rapids.  She was widowed by the passing of Fred on September 9, 2011.  Evelyn continued to live with her daughter Marlene at the home on Walnut Street until Marlene passed on September 15, 2015.  Evelyn lived with her son Fred Jr. for a few months but was forced by health issues to move to Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids in June of 2016 where she received excellent care.  Evelyn enjoyed sewing, quilting, all types of needlework, raising flowers, walking, cooking, canning, and making candy.  She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, dancing, reading, and most of all spending time with her family.

     Evelyn is survived by her children and their families: son Frederick G. Long Jr. (Sandy) of Jefferson, daughter Deborah A. Kult (Jerald) of Coon Rapids, and daughter Lora A. Snyder (Lawrence) of Halbur, IA; her grandchildren: Teresa Olson (Paul) of Jamestown, ND, Maria Wilson (Todd) of Chicago, Jennifer Tonko (Sean) of Northfield, MN, Keegan Kult (Kimberly) of Ankeny, Jessica Grote of Des Moines, Nichole Gust (Greyson) of Audubon; and great-grandchildren: Phoebe, Siddha, Daphne, Whitten, Tilia, Brycen, Caleb, Ashlynn, Kayli, William, and Katie.  Evelyn is also survived by her sister Anna Kenney of Portsmouth, IA, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

     Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Mary Leinen; her father and mother-in-law Warren and Emma Long; a daughter Marlene Long; a grandson Robert Snyder; brothers: Louis, Harold, Mathias, and Lawrence; sisters: Agnes Hodapp, Helena Elbert, Barbara Goodman, and Rosemary Laing; and her husband Frederick G. Long on September 9, 2011.
