Carroll Man Arrested Following Three-County High-Speed Chase

A Carroll man remains in custody at the Carroll County jail following a high-speed pursuit through three counties last Friday. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office reports 39-year-old Nickolas John Downs, who was wanted on outstanding warrants, refused to pull over for a deputy, instead leading a chase that reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour on gravel and over 110 miles per hour on Timber Avenue north of Glidden. Downs was driving extremely erratically and creating high-risk situations for other drivers as he traveled through Carroll County and into Calhoun County, where authorities there joined in the pursuit. An Iowa State Patrol Trooper was able to perform a successful pit maneuver outside of Fort Dodge in Webster County to bring the incident to an end. Downs has been charged with a class D felony for eluding.
