State Baseball Is Back At Merchants Park

Changes at Principal Park in Des Moines for this year’s minor league play led the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) to begin searching for potential new sites for the four-day long state baseball tournament. Director of Carroll Parks and Recreation, Jack Wardell, says a lot of people jumped into action, working to get the tournament back into Merchants Park.

Members of the IHSAA made the trip to Carroll to check out the park and the recent renovations.

That quick action and the facility that brings compliments from visitors far and wide have led to good news for the Carroll area.

Wardell says they began early planning for the eventuality the IHSAA would approve Merchants Park and are ahead of the game, but there is still a lot to get done in a short period of time.

They need to call on residents from around the area to help out as well.

Tom Louis, the Parks and Rec Director the last time the tournament was in Carroll, has joined others in playing an instrumental role in this effort.

He adds this is not only great news for baseball fans.

Wardell says they were told up front this will be a one-year arrangement. However, there is always the possibility it could become a long-term event. Contact information for volunteers can be found below.
