Kuemper finished off a 2-0 day and claimed the championship in the CYO Tournament on Sunday. They held off Remsen St Mary’s in the semifinals and then rallied in the Finals.

A couple big innings early helped them build a comfortable 8-1 lead over Remsen St Mary’s in the first game off the day on Sunday. Benicio Lujano jolted the offense in the 2nd inning with a triple that drove in Luke Hicks and Cooper Pottebaum. Lujano scored on the play as the ball was thrown away trying to get him at 3rd. Hicks had been hit by a pitch and Pottebaum walked so Kuemper took advantage of the extra base runners. Austin Tigges got into the deep drive fun in the 3rd with a triple that scored Blake Pottebaum. Hicks, Cooper Pottebaum and Lujano added RBI singles and Kuemper led 7-1 heading into the bottom 3rd. They added a run in the 4th and 5th inning on a Cal Wanninger double, Michael Pottebaum scored when the Hawks tried to pick him off 2nd and threw it away twice. Logan Sibenaller had score in the 4th on a double steal attempt as he scored from 3rd. Cal Wanninger pitched early but Remsen St Mary’s got to him in the 4th scoring 4 runs on 3 hits. Nate Heinrich came in and pitched the final 3 innings to clinch the win.

The Knights had 1o hits with Benicio Lujano picking up 2 including a triple. He added a team high 3 RBI. Kuemper had eight other players have 1 hit with triples by Austin Tigges and a double by Cal Wanninger. Luck Hicks, Cooper Pottebaum both scored twice. Wanninger earned the win going 4 innings giving up 5 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks. Nate Heinrich pitched the final 3 innings and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits.

The championship game didn’t start the way the Knights wanted it too. They gave up 5-runs in the 1st inning, but hung close enough to make a run late. They score in each of the first three innings with a 3-run 2nd keeping them in striking distance. They out hit St Albert 17 to 11 and the top part of the order was tough picking up 12 of the 17 hits. The Knights trailed 9-5 heading into the bottom of the 5th and scored 3 to make it a 1-run game. They added 4 more runs in the 6th and then shut the door in the top of the 7th.

Blake Pottebaum had a team high 4 hits including a double, Logan Sibenaller and Trevor Rial both had 3 hits and Austin Tigges and Luke Hicks both garnered 2 hits. Cal Wanninger had a team high 3 RBI and Michael Pottebaum added 2 RBI and a pair of runs scored. Blake Pottebaum had a team high 3 runs scored and Rial and Tigges each scored twice.

The Knights improved to 4-0 on the season and will face St Albert in Council Bluffs on Tuesday.
