DMACC Offers High School Students Opportunity To Explore Careers Before College

Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) will begin hosting Virtual Career Discovery Pathways this week and they will continue throughout the month of April. These free events are open to high school students in grades nine through 12 as well as their parents and teachers. There will be nine total events to provide “a taste” of various career pathways available before students enter college. These include fields such as the social behavioral sciences, humanities and communication, construction, design, business and marketing and more. “It’s important that we continue to offer young people experiences that allow them to explore potential future careers and areas of interest,” says DMACC Career Discovery Network Coordinator, Amy Steenhoek. During Discover DMACC Pathway days, students will virtually attend a 90-minute informational session that includes a professional’s story about how they got to where they are today as well as about the day-to-day life in that career and then the opportunity to get advice in question-and-answer sessions. The Ask a Professional events are 25-minute sessions that focus on the details about a professional’s career. The series of events kicks-off Thursday, April 1 at 1 p.m. with a business spotlight on ChildServe who will discuss working with young adults and children with various medical needs. This is followed at 1:45 p.m. with an Ask a Professional event focused on respiratory therapy. Chris Leferink, who is a therapist at ChildServe, will share details about his education, his background and the rewards and challenges of his career in healthcare. Details about the other pathway events and links for registration can be found below.
