Shirley Auen of Carroll

Shirley Mae Auen, age 86, of Carroll, IA, passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2021 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

     Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Fr. Kevin Richter officiating.  Pall bearers will be Shirley’s grandchildren.  Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

     Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 – 2 P.M. prior to the service.

     Shirley was born on April 26, 1934 in Templeton, IA, and she was the daughter of Tony and Barbara (Reicher) Heitman.  She grew up in Templeton and graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1952 where she played on the girls basketball team.  She was married to Kenneth Auen on July 14, 1952 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton.  The couple made their home in Carroll where they raised their three children.  Shirley worked for Sears and Houlihan Oil. She then worked for many years as an Optician at Midwest Vision Center in Carroll.  Shirley was a member of St. Lawrence Parish.  She enjoyed watching basketball, jig saw puzzles, playing cards, and spending time with her family and many good friends.  Shirley was an awesome grandmother and cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

     Shirley is survived by her husband Kenneth of Carroll; her three children and their families: Stephen Auen of Missoula, MT; Debra Beiter of Urbandale; and Thomas Auen (Beth) of West Des Moines; six grandchildren: Nick Beiter Jr. (Alicia) of Urbandale, Michael Beiter (Bridget) of Waukee, Jacob and Haley Auen of West Des Moines, and Josh (Sarah) and Jason (Kristin) Tack of Montana; three great-grandchildren: Beckett and Hudson Beiter and Sawyer Tack  ; a sister Pat Larsen of Abilene, TX; two brothers-in-law Dennis Auen of Carroll and Mel Dorpinghaus of Maumelle, AR; and several nieces and nephews.

    Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Tony and Barbara Heitman; her father and mother-in-law Peter and Henrietta Auen; two sisters: Carol Macke (Leonard) and Ruth Dieter (Cy); and a daughter-in-law Jeanne Auen
