MidAmerican Energy Takes Steps To Help Customers With High February Gas Bills

MidAmerican Energy has announced they have taken steps in an effort to assist customers with February gas bills that saw not only an increase due to a particularly cold segment of the month, but also due to market price spikes related to an unprecedented cold snap in the southern United States. Last week, MidAmerican requested the Iowa Utilities Board suspend a current rule requiring them to collect all heating-related costs from consumers during a limited billing window, set to end in August. In addition to this request, at an upcoming March 12 meeting of that board, MidAmerican has plans to discuss additional proposals to ease their customers’ financial pressures. During the subzero temperatures from Feb. 5 through Feb. 18, residential customers used 50 percent more natural gas than normal for that two-week period. It is anticipated March bills will be about $13 higher for residential customers with higher gas bills throughout the rest of the year estimated at a total average of $214 more per customer. For commercial users in Iowa, the average March bill will likely be $95 higher than February with an estimated average increase of $1,182 for the year. In addition to exploring budget billing to manage these changes, MidAmerican urges customers who are facing financial hardships to communicate with them so they can discuss options available. “For nearly a year, customers have been dealing with extraordinary circumstances that have taken their toll and stretched paychecks,” says Vice President of Customer Operations, Mike Gehringer. “We don’t want these increased bill amounts caused by the cold weather to be another worry. There are resources available to help.” Contact details are included below.
