The Knights led at the half before a dry spell in the 3rd allowed the Panthers to pull ahead.  Catherine Mayhall continued her scoring explosion and helped the offense build a 3 point lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Sophmore point guard has upped her scoring average since she lost her backcourt running mate Brooklyn Gifford last week. Kora Thomsen and Kyndal Hilgenberg have also begun to score more while Akuet Malek continues shutting down the lane and Frannie Glynn is becoming a force on the boards.

The Knights were up 3 at half but only scored 6 points in the 3rd quarter and found themselves down 12 heading into the final stanza.

Carroll At Perry

Carroll 66

Perry 29

Carroll was sharp in the road win as they improved to 7-6 overall and 5-6 in the Raccoon River Conference. The Tigers used their pressure defense to build and early lead as Kennedy Lein was able to get several steals and turned those into layups on the other end. When Carroll had to run their half-court offense they executed well and had a good night shooting from beyond the arc. Head Coach Katie Kock was happy with how they executed things and felt they were able to work on a few offensive sets. She likes how her team has progressed in understanding why they are running what they are and what they are trying to accomplish with those sets.

Kennedy Lein led the team with 16 points, Ella Collison added 12 points, and Laura Sweeney and Hannah Jorgensen each had 9 points. Jorgensen shot it very well from beyond the arc.

The Tigers head to Winterset on Tuesday.

Paton Churdan At Coon Rapids Bayard

Paton Churdan 49

Coon Rapids Bayard 34

It was a battle in the 1st half as both teams came out with great defensive game plans that stifled the other team. The Rockets struggled shooting in the 1st half, that quickly changed in the 2nd half as Tessa Steimel hit an early 3 and the Rockets were off and running as they built a 22 point lead in the 2nd half.

Brynn Bass drained a 3 from the right win in the 1st quarter putting Coon Rapids Bayard ahead 5-2. They extended it to 7-2 as their defense surrounded Danielle Hoyle. They were face guarding her and then quadruple teaming her every time she got the ball. Hoyle was finding the shooters but they weren’t falling in the 1st half. The Crusaders led 9-5 at the end of the 1st quarter. Things began to change in the 2nd quarter and Karissa Stephenson provide the Rockets with the spark. She knocked down a 3 to put them ahead 10-9 early in the 2nd quarter. Coon Rapids Bayard responded and Mia Leighty put them back up 13-12 but that would be their last lead of the game. Emma Stream hit a jumper to put Paton Churdan back up 14-13 and after the Crusaders tied the game at 14 the Rockets edged ahead at the break 16-14.

Tessa Steimel began the Rockets onslaught in the 2nd half with a 3 and the lead was 19-14. Chloe Berns added a 3, making it 24-14 and the Rockets were off and running. Steimel knocked down 3-3’s in the 3rd quarter and Paton Churdan outscored Coon Rapids Bayard 24-7 to blow the game open. Karissa Stephenson, Chloe Berns and Hoyle were also huge in the 3rd. Hoyle had 7 points at half and only finished with 12 but she began to dominate the glass and was swatting shots away left and right. Stephenson frustrated the Cruaders getting her hands on passes and playing great defense inside. Berns had 2 points at half but hit 3-3’s in the 2nd half.

Breeley Clayburg was a big reason Coon Rapids Bayard hung close in the 1st half. She scored 6 points but was a force on the boards with 9 in the 1st half. She kept getting them 2nd and 3rd chance opportunities in the 1st half. Brynn Bass focused on face guarding Hoyle in the 1st half and after that early 3 didn’t score again until the 2nd half. She tried to pull the Crusaders back in the game in the 4th quarter and finished with 14 points.

Danielle Hoyle led Paton Churdan with 12 points and 15 rebounds, Chloe Berns finished with 11 points, Tessa Steimel added 9 points and 4 assists. Karissa Stepnenson added 7 points and 5 rebounds.

Brynn Bass ended up pacing Coon Rapids Bayard with 14 points, Breeley Clayburg finished with 8 points and 14 rebounds, Alaya Betts had 7 rebounds and Miranda Garcia pulled down 5 rebounds.

The win improves Paton Churdan to 11-3 overall and 9-2 in the Rolling Valley. Coon Rapids Bayard falls to 4-7 overall and 3-7 in the Rolling Valley. Paton Churdan heads to West Harrison on Tuesday while the Crusaders are at Ogden on Monday.
