Glidden City Council Begins Budget Preparations With Special Work Session

The Glidden City Council is getting into Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 budget preparation after holding their first work session on the topic last week. City officials stayed after the Monday, Jan. 11 meeting, and according to Administrator, Brooke Peterson, focused primarily on upcoming capital projects, and projections for their Local Option Sales Tax (L.O.S.T.) and General Funds.

She adds the largest items identified so far are an overlay project for Colorado Street, a substantial water main replacement and continued construction on the city’s new wastewater facility. Peterson says 2020 posed numerous challenges from a budgetary perspective, but fortunately, the city managed to avoid incurring any substantial losses.

As a result, Peterson says residents should not expect any major deviations from the overall property tax rate of $11.63 per $1,000 of taxable valuation from FY21. She notes residents will start seeing slight increases in their water and sewage bills this year that were implemented to help fund the wastewater project. The city council will continue to work on budget preparations through the end of March as that is when documents are due to the Iowa Department of Management.
