Kuemper 58
Atlantic scored a bucket right at the end of the 1st quarter to edge ahead of the Knights 16-14 in what was an entertaining quarter. There were 3 lead changes and 3 ties in the first eight minutes. The game changed early in the 2nd when Atlantic hit a 3 on 5 of 7 possessions and scored a 2 on the other two possessions while Kuemper struggled to get a look and didn’t score. The Trojan lead went from 18-16 to 36-16 in a few minutes and Kuemper was in a hole they would nearly get dug out of but fell just short being down 4 points with around a minute to play.
Michael Pottebaum, Dawson Gifford and Noah Bauer helped spark a rally as Kuemper cut it to 12 by half. The lead was back to 15 early in the 3rd but Kuemper again charged back and were down 9 after 3. Mitchell Badding was big early in the game keeping Kuemper close in the 1st quarter driving to the basket and scoring. As the Trojans focused on him in the 2nd half the Knights were able to get Pottebaum, Gifford and Bauer going and John Mayhall found his range knocking down a couple buckets and 4 free throws during the late run. The Kuemper defense played with more energy in the 2nd half and held Atlantic to 2 made 3’s in the 2nd half after giving up 7 in the 1st half.
Michael Pottebaum and Mitchell Badding each finished with 13 points while Mayhall added 12. Isaac Evans was solid inside adding 8 points and 8 rebounds while blocking 4 shots.
The loss drops Kuemper to 2-6 overall as they prepare to head to Van Meter on Monday.
