Kuemper vs Denison
Kuemper: 57
Denison: 54
The Kuemper Knights were able to run away with their first victory of the season by closely edging out Denison Schleswig. The first half featured some scoring troubles for both teams as Kuemper held the lead 4-0 for most of the first quarter. Both teams picked up the pace and ended the first quarter with a close score of 11 to 10 in favor of Denison Schleswig. Senior John Mayhall of Kuemper was showing off his ball handling skills and ended his first half with 10 points. The second quarter is where the Knights came alive and capitalized on the Monarch’s mistakes. Kuemper went on a 10-0 run and left the Monarchs with six points in the second quarter. Senior Braiden Heiden of Denison Schleswig, who is averaging 23 points per game this season, was only able to drive in a layup in the second quarter. Mayhall and Senior Matthew Hensel were able to drain a couple three’s to lead Keumper into halftime with a 28-17 lead.
Back from halftime, the Knights ran into some trouble against a Denison Schleswig offense who made 45% of their shots up until this game. The Monarchs came back from a disappointing third quarter by outscoring the Knights 20-11 behind a pair of threes from Junior Hunter Emery and an impressive five points from Heiden. Being ahead a mere 39-37, the Knights needed a good offensive push in order to get their first win of the season. Behind Senior Mitchell Badding, they did just that as he sunk two three pointers and drove in two free throws for an impressive 10 points in the fourth quarter. The Monarch’s Heiden wouldn’t let the game slip away that easily as he sunk two different threes to make it a close one point game. Both times that close point difference would be snuffed away by free throws made by Mayhall and Badding. While closer than expected, the Knights pulled away from this game 57-54 winning their first game of the season.
Individually for the Knights, Mayhall ended the night with 17 points, three assists, and one rebound.
