Crews Battle Bale Fire Near Lake City For Nearly 10 Hours Thursday

Fire crews were on scene for almost 10 hours yesterday (Thursday) as they worked to extinguish a large bale fire in the southwestern portion of Calhoun County. The Lake City, Rockwell City, Lohrville, Auburn, and Lanesboro Fire Departments were dispatched to a farm property at the intersection of 350th Street and Kingsley Avenue about a mile northeast of Lake City at approximately 8:30 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters located an open-air bale storage area that had ignited. They worked to contain the fire while a neighbor and the other crews dug a firebreak and evacuated livestock from an adjacent lot. Lake City Fire Chief, Lynn Boyd, says they were able to prevent damage to buildings on the property, but between 500 and 700 bales were lost in the blaze. According to Boyd, the fire likely started after the bales were struck by lightning Thursday morning. The Lake City Police Department and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
