Carroll won a marathon set to open the match, cruised in set two and then had to hold on to end the match in three as they move into the Regional Final against Sergeant Bluff Luton on Tuesday At Sergeant Bluff Luton Elementary school.
The first set was back and forth and had both fan bases on the edge of their seats. The set was tied 18 times and there were 7 lead changes with Carroll taking their final lead at 30-29 but it still took several points before they won 33-31. Ella Collison was incredible early swinging with such power and getting the Monarchs on their heels. Before the set was over Josie Ayala came on and both were near double digits in kills by the end of the set. The Monarchs had found a spot in the donut and were tipping to open spots after the Tigers were blocking and digging their swings. That move kept them in the set.
Set two belonged to Carroll who got up 1-0 and never trailed. The set was tied three times but Carroll begin to pull away with a 6-0 run to go up 9-3. Kennedy Lein began to find spaces in the left front and had success with the slide. Carroll built their largest lead at 17-7. The Monarchs trimmed that lead to 21-16 but Carroll responded out of a timeout and won going away.
Carroll looked like they had Denison Schleswig put away a couple times in the third set but the Monarchs wouldn’t go away. The Tigers led by 6 several times but Denison Schleswig fought back and tied the set at 13 before taking a 14-13 lead. That was their only lead as Carroll went back up 15-14 and never trailed again though it was tied 3 more times the last time at 24. Carroll had led 23-20 and 24-21 but got safe and the Monarchs were able to take advantage. Carroll called a timeout and were able to score the final two points.
Josie Ayala, Ella Colllison and Kennedy Lein were all in double digits in kills with Ayala leading the way with 15, Collison added 14 and Lein was outstanding and added 11. Laure Sweeney was all over the floor on Thursday finishing with 45 assists to go with a team high 16 digs. Hannah Jorgensen added 15 digs and a team high 4 aces. Lein and Ayala also had 3 blocks.
The win moves Carroll to 23-10 on the season.
