Lake City – Terry Sharkey, 64, died at his home on Thursday, October 1, 2020. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City with Rev. Rick Hamilton officiating and burial in Cottonwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday at Lampe Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6 p.m.
Terry was born to Lyle (Bud) and Joan Sharkey on July 27, 1956 in Lake City. He was baptized in August of 1956 and received his first communion in 1964. He attended Lake City schools and graduated in 1975. He met Cindy DeVries in high school and was smitten. They married when she finished school and welcomed Jolynn and David soon after. Although some might say Terry and Cindy only had two kids for quite awhile, that is simply not true. They welcomed many kids into their home, nieces and nephews or kids that just needed some help over the years and he served as an honorary papa for them. Terry might have acted annoyed by kids running in and out, but he was most comfortable with a full house of kids causing a racket.
Terry held several jobs including selling tires, road construction and grain elevators before retiring in 2013 due to health reasons. Terry bowled in various leagues and bowled a 300 game in 1985. He enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards and cheering on the Denver Broncos and Iowa Hawkeyes and hollering at everyone who stopped over.
Terry was preceded in death by his grandparents; father Lyle (Bud) Sharkey; mothers-in-law Sharon Blankenship and Marilyn DeVries; brother-in-law Kenny DeVries; son-in-law Danny Nielsen; and nephew Justin Blankenship. He leaves behind his wife Cindy; children Jolynn Nielsen, David (Melissa) Sharkey and Ember Blankenship; grandchildren Melissa, Tyler, Hannah, Rebecca, Isaiah, Noah, Elizabeth, Brooklyn and Aidyn; mother Joan Sharkey; father-in-law Dean DeVries; brother Steve (Patty) Sharkey; brothers- and sisters-in-law Teresa (Steve) Montes, Pat (Shelley) Blankenship, Jessica (Chad) Meyer, Mike DeVries, Joey DeVries and Tim DeVries. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews, cousins, his “crew” and multitude of friends.
We know Terry is better off in heaven but he left us too early.
