Carroll County Public Health announced the second positive COVID-19 case in the county on Wednesday. Director, Nikki Schwering, says there are rules in place that limit the amount of information they can give on any patient.
Schwering says, unfortunately, there is a stigma associated with the positive patients and it is yet another reason confidentiality is so critical. When it comes to the tracing she mentioned, Schwering says they follow some basic guidelines.
Testing in the county has ticked up a bit in the past week and, as of Thursday morning, there were about 23 of 174 that had not yet been returned. The timing of the new positive case came days before a phased reopening of some businesses in Carroll and the surrounding counties. According to Schwering, this is a bit of a wake-up call for many after a relatively quiet period in our immediate area lately.
She stresses people should still react as if everyone they meet has the virus.
Most importantly, everyone should continue good hygiene, hand washing with soap and water thoroughly along with not touching their mouth, nose or eyes, and cleaning high-touch areas and items frequently. Schwering says we should also be looking at this situation as a solidified group. It is important for us as citizens and businesses to make good decisions and do our part to keep ourselves and others safe. She believes the numbers will continue to grow and predicts it will not be another month before the county has another case, adding it is now moving to our part of the state with the peak predicted next week around May 7.
