The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education unanimously approved the proposed calendar for the 2020-21 school year at last night’s (Monday) meeting. Classes begin on Tuesday, Aug. 25 with a four-day week. New instructors will report for orientation Friday, Aug. 14 with all staff returning Wednesday, Aug. 19. Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says the calendar closely resembles the one for the 2019-20 year, but there are some notable changes, one of them being professional development.
They had originally planned for the final day of classes to fall on Friday, May 21, but Berlau says they discovered an error Monday afternoon that will force them to push the dismissal date back several days.
Historically, Carroll and Kuemper have alternated their graduation weekends to allow friends and family members to make it to both ceremonies. With both graduations now falling on the same date, Berlau says he has already started planning with Kuemper administrators to avoid conflicting schedules.
Due to state regulations limiting how early districts can begin classes and the time between senior dismissal and their graduation ceremonies, shared graduation dates for the schools will likely be a recurring issue in the coming years.
