Gov. Reynods Orders Flags To Half-Staff In Honor Of Iowa’s First Female Lt. Gov.

Flags will be lowered to half-staff on Thursday and Friday in honor and remembrance of Iowa’s first female lieutenant governor, Jo Ann Zimmerman, who died Tuesday evening. Gov. Kim Reynolds issued the order Wednesday afternoon to lower all flags from sunrise tomorrow (Thursday), Oct. 24 to sunset on Friday, Oct. 25. “Jo Ann blazed a trail for others to follow. As a nurse, school board member, legislator and Lt. Governor, she led with a caring heart and with a true passion for public service. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and loved ones,” says Reynolds. Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building, on flag displays in the Capitol Complex and on all public buildings grounds and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to participate as a sign of respect. Zimmerman, a Democrat, served in the position from 1987 to 1991 with former Republican Gov. Terry Branstad. Prior to 1990, Iowa governors and lieutenant governors did not run on the same ticket.
