Victim Reports Caller Posed As Local Law Enforcement In Recent Phone Scam

The Storm Lake Police Department reports a resident contacted them today (Wednesday), claiming they had received a scam call from an individual posing as a local police officer. According to law enforcement, the caller told the victim that the Storm Lake Police Department had arrested the victim’s daughter and she was being held in a jail outside of the community. Like many similar scams, the victim was told they would need to pay before she would be released by purchasing gift cards or prepaid debit cards and providing the numbers from the back. Authorities advise citizens to be cautious of anybody who calls and request payment for any reason, especially via wire transfers, gift cards, prepaid cards or other similar methods. Officials note that no legitimate business or government agency will ever request payment in this manner. When in doubt, hang up and contact your local law enforcement directly.
