Kuemper Spanish Teacher, Winnie Geelan-Potthoff, Recognized For 43-Year Career With The 2019 Veteran Teacher Of The Year Award

Winnie Geelan-Potthoff, who has taught Spanish at Kuemper High School for more than four decades, has been recognized for her dedication to the profession with the 2019 Carroll Broadcasting Veteran Teacher of the Year Award. Geelan-Potthoff, more commonly known as GP by her students, is in her 43rd year of working in education and has been with Kuemper since the beginning of her career. She was presented the award during a surprise assembly Tuesday afternoon. After being named as a recipient, she said her time teaching has gone by quickly and she is blessed to be an educator.

There was a consistent theme in the many nominations for Geelan-Potthoff. Current and former students, their families and her colleagues all said in their submissions she is fun-loving, enthusiastic and dedicated to making her classes enjoyable and educational. She did not disagree with those descriptions.

She added teaching meshes well with her outlook on life. According to her, each day is a new adventure and that is how she likes it.

Video from the presentation can be found included with this story on our website. Carroll Broadcasting will bring you more from the other 2019 Teacher of the Year Award recipients in upcoming broadcasts.
